Kurapika also gets his first chance at revenge against those who destroyed his family, in a one-on-one, to-the-death battle against Uva. In this one, we finally got a proper battle between Spiders and those against the Spiders, though primarily against the Spider known as "Uva", who's basically your circus strong-man, turned up to 11 and with a serious taste for blood and violence. It's a thrilling rollercoaster where people are suddenly killed off and people can be swayed by their own personal motives.Īnd in the margins we have Gon and friends' antics, slowly leading them to a confrontation with the Phantom Troupe, which they are woefully unprepared for.įuck, this is one of the best volumes of manga I've ever read.more But the sequence between the auction and Kurapika's battle with Uvogin constantly brought that word to mind. I know "heist" probably isn't the right word. This is followed by an exciting car chase that sees further application of incredibly creative abilities. These weird abilities aren't just interesting conceptually they are a serious threat that can inflict cringe-inducing damage that can border on body horror. And each punctuated by a shocking level of violence and gross disfigurement that really hits home given the series's more cartoony art.
The battle between Uvogin and the Shadow Beasts had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what strange new thing would happen.

In addition, the series continues to impress with the sheer creativity of its characters. It's a complex web of intersecting allegiance, goals, and relationships that always runs the risk of teetering into needless complication, but never does. They're all just living their lives and acting in their nature and inevitably collide with one another. There's no grand cosmic plan that brought them together. These people are brought into conflict with one another because each person is trying to fulfill their own goal, which leads to conflict. Hisoka allies with the Phantom Troupe simply so he can get closer to a fight with its leader. Gon just wants the treasure to follow his father's trail, but he's struggling to even show up to the dance. For Kurapika, the mission to get the treasure is just a means to an end. He had no issue with them, he just had a job to do.
Even Kurapika's quest for revenge is a matter of circumstances.įor Uvogin, killing the Kurta was just another job. And none of them are ideologically opposed they just happen to have conflicting goals. The Phantom Troupe and Kurapika's crew each has its share of likeable characters. Hisoka, the flute girl, Kurapika and others all fight for their given group for their own individual reasons. Part of what I like so much is how well rounded each group feels.
